Painted canvas mats have been used on tables, chairs and floors for centuries. Their durability and easy maintenance make them just right for entry and hallways, kitchen, dining room, porch or other high use areas. Designing and creating your own painted canvas mat gives you the opportunity to blend art and craft in an endless variety of traditional and contemporary designs. Whether created as a focal point or as an accessory to existing decorative elements, your painted mat will be designed for everyday use.
For floor mats, we will start with heavy cotton canvas, which we will prime, paint and varnish all with water based acrylic, and latex products. For projects to be used on a table, we may start with a lighter, pre-primed canvas. Each student will be guided in the project of their choice. Instructions will be given in the use of color and a variety of decorative techniques including freehand painting, stencils, simple screen and block printing. Faux painting techniques can be explored, but will not be covered in depth.
Materials: Students should bring their own acrylic paint and brushes. Further recommendations will be made in class. Bulk materials such as canvas, textile primer, latex base coat, acrylic varnish and paste wax can be provided by the studio for a minimal cost. Instructional handouts will be provided and reference books will be available in class. Please bring any books, photos, fabrics, color swatches or other designs that inspire you.
